The sisseton THPO office is now beginning work on the history of the Ascension church and cemetary(s). I know there are members on the board that have actually been there and maybe even hiked the hill as we just did. My hats off to all that have because it was no easy task. I am now researching the history of the church in hopes that it may someday be listed on the state historical register. I will be sharing anything that I find that might be helpful to all in the future. I am wondering if anyone would like to share their experience with the cemetary or allow me to note their ancestor who is buried there. We would love to attatch with the collected maps and data anything that would relate to the church or cemetary.
have a great day! Tamara

Tamara, Here is the entry for Ascension from the book The First 50 Years Dakota Presbytery to 1890 Are you working with Mr. Selvage on this? If so, I won't need to post these entries, as I sent him the whole book awhile back. Let me know.

Tamara, would it be possible for you to post the directions to these cemeteries? I know it took me a full year to find MountainHead, and this would be a wonderful help to a lot of folks. Thanks!

If so, I won't need to post these entries, as I sent him the whole book awhile back. Let me know. Actually I work for Mr Selvage in a way...lol But I have to consider that his time for research himself (and he is quite a historian) is very limited with the bulk of his time handling SWO affairs. So I am much on my own unless it is mandatory. I do try to keep him posted as well as the THPO office supervisors. We also work with Aloma at the Archives. I am very pleased with the connnections and support we recieve. My hope is to see the efforts being made at the THPO office and Archives continue to grow as steadlily as they been in the future. We also have a staff member who is working with Tammy DeCouteu and Dr Johnson on the restoration and preservation of our language. There are some great things happening in all the right directions. I just need to see if I can keep up with everyone! Tamara

I did see Thompsons according to the draft of the map. The Thompsons I saw were on the lower level at the newer cemetery. I will let you know what I find.
have a great weekend Tamara

Tamara, Hello! I was wondering if you would know if the Edwin Phellps on the Ascension Church you posted has a sister named Solista/Solice /Salice/Celese/Celeste Phelps or Phellps? AKA (Blue Hair Woman) or (Hinto).

Hi Wbyno, I'll just jump in here! The only Phelps' at Sisseton between 1875 and 1900 were Edwin and his family. He received a SW land allotment in 1875, #25, p.6. He appears with his family on the Elrod Roll, age 41 Ellen, wife, age 35 Children, Hannah, Gideon, Matthew and Ellen.
In Max Renville's land records book, there is a Wiyan who is listed as the mother of Edwin Phelps. Wiyan's brother was Elias Gilbert. I do not find Wiyan on any early SW records. Do you know if Solista/Solice /Salice/Celese/Celeste married? Her married name would be most helpful in finding her.

Vicky Hello, Celeste Pamani was her married name she married Frank Pamani and both went to Hampton School. She is buried here at crow Creek. From the information that I got she was from Standing Rock and on the Hampton roster it has that a Black Mosquito was her father? I hope this helps.

My Great great Grandfather idi the same thing, but was in Vinton county, Ohio where he was given a land grant after the war. My Grandfather's last name was Knowlton, but have no info's on my Grandmothers.

moonwillow: Do you know his first name?if so, go to www.familysearch.org and do a search for him. what does this indian woman have to do with your ancestry? After what war did mr. Knowlton receive his land grant? Are you related to him on your mother or Father' side?Track backwards on your family tree as far as you can go on both sides.
